In June 2026 Türkiye’s Human Rights and Equality Institution (TİHEK) fined Meta’s local company after finding that removing an applicant’s pro-Palestinian Instagram posts and banning the account from live broadcasting was discriminatory — a public body acting on an individual complaint about Meta’s content and account restrictions. Nationwide blocks of a platform, such as Instagram’s in August 2024, are a different matter from individual account suspensions.

TİHEK found that Meta Platforms İstanbul discriminated on the basis of political or philosophical opinion by removing an applicant’s pro-Palestinian Instagram posts and banning the account from live broadcasts, and imposed an administrative fine of 256,357 lira. Meta had restored the posts and lifted the restriction after TİHEK requested information, but the institution held that the violation had already occurred; the decision can be challenged at an Ankara administrative court within 60 days of notification.

Türkiye’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) blocked Instagram nationwide from 2 to 10 August 2024, saying it had not removed content listed as offences under Law No. 5651, and the media-rights group MLSA sued. This was a block of the whole platform, not individual account suspensions.
