PSA: turn on 2FA (re: the AI support hijacking story)

Not a ban story, just a PSA. Apparently someone found a hole in Meta's AI support flow this spring and used it to take over around 20k Instagram accounts. The number I saw was 20,225, from a notice Meta filed with the Maine attorney general. Hacked accounts are one of the most common ways people on here end up disabled in the first place (hacker posts junk, YOU get the ban). So take 2 minutes: - Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication. authenticator app if you can - save the backup codes somewhere that isn't your phone - make sure the email on the account is one you can still get into, and put 2FA on that too - request a Download Your Information every few months while you're at it that's it. stay safe

  1. Good shout. Also check Accounts Center > Where you're logged in. Found an old tablet I sold years ago still logged in to mine.
  2. Does SMS 2FA count? I don't really get authenticator apps
    1. SMS is way better than nothing! (I'm the one who posted this btw.) An authenticator is a bit safer because of SIM swap scams. Any free authenticator app works, you scan a QR code once and it gives you the codes from then on.
