Writing this because I found almost nothing practical when I needed it. Background: Dutch, 41, on Facebook since 2009. In October my account was disabled for 'dangerous organisations and individuals'. As far as I can tell it was because I shared an old photo from a WW2 history group (a museum photo of Rotterdam after the bombing, with a caption about my grandfather). No warning, no strike before that. Timeline: - 14 Oct: disabled. Appealed in the app the same night. - 16 Oct: appeal rejected. - 20 Oct: submitted a dispute to Appeals Centre Europe through their website. It was free for me. They asked for screenshots of the notice, the reference from Meta's appeal, and a short explanation in my own words. - Early Nov: email that the case was accepted and that they had asked Meta for the content. - Mid Dec: decision. They found the decision should be reversed. If I understood it correctly, Meta never showed them which post was the problem. - 9 Jan: account back. No message from Meta, it just worked again. Things to know: - Their decision is not binding on Meta. I think I was lucky, don't treat it as guaranteed. - It's for people in the EU (it's under the Digital Services Act). - They don't take every kind of case. On their site I read that hacked accounts, impersonation, child sexual abuse material and fake account / bot decisions are out of scope, so check their eligibility page first. - I think they want you to have tried Meta's own appeal first, at least they asked for the reference. - Stick to facts. I wrote in English but I believe other EU languages are fine. Happy to answer questions.

Brilliant writeup. Can I use this from the UK? Same thing happened to my wife's IG.

@JK from Leeds unfortunately I don't think so. It's under the EU Digital Services Act, so the UK isn't covered after Brexit. Sorry.

UK here, I checked this too, and no. What UK people do instead is a subject access request under UK GDPR to at least get their data back, and complain to the ICO if Meta ignores it. Doesn't get the account back though.

Danke für den ausführlichen Bericht! Ich bin aus Österreich und habe meinen Fall letzte Woche eingereicht, auf Deutsch ging das problemlos. Mal sehen, was rauskommt.

Mine was the CSE reason so I guess I'm out of scope. Frustrating, it's the one category where people need it most

@Anonymous yes, I saw that and agree it's frustrating. Read their site yourself in case I got it wrong. The European Commission also keeps a list of the other certified bodies, maybe one of them covers it.

Kurzes Update: Fall wurde angenommen, jetzt warten sie auf die Unterlagen von Meta. Kann wohl dauern. Ich melde mich, wenn sich was tut.
